Neighborhood Park: Rock Park 36 - Whitewater Park at Rock Park

Sparks Mayor, City Council members, City Manager and local dignitaries try out the new park

Rock Park, located along the Truckee River in Sparks, is now home to one of the hottest new whitewater attractions in the region thanks to a comprehensive makeover of the 30 year old park, originally built with land/water conservation grant funding. Fast forward to 2009 and this exciting recreational destination offers pools for kayaking, tubing and rafting for all abilities in a picturesque setting.

The City of Sparks pursued the development of the environmentally friendly recreational facility as part of an ongoing effort for urban revitalization and river corridor beautification. After a rigorous regulatory review process, construction began in July of 2008. The resulting design allows for greater public access to the river, including handicap entry in two different places.

"This is a unique attraction that will definitely raise the bar for recreation in the Truckee Meadows," said Sparks Parks and Recreation Director, Stan Sherer. "The diversity of the recreational opportunities  whether at the water's edge, within the channel or in the rehabilitated park are significant."

Additional enhancements range from increased parking areas, new shade structures and play structures, to landscape improvements and upgrades to the river trail system which travels through the area.

"This park will appeal to everyone, Sherer said. We've taken a park in disrepair and given it back to the community with amenities geared for family-oriented usage while maintaining a whitewater course even the most expert kayaker can enjoy. It's a great asset not only for our community, but for people throughout the region."

Special thanks to Tahoe Whitewater for supplying rafts and guides for the opening ceremony!
