      The Victim Advocate provides assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking. Once a person has been victimized, it is crucial that they get the answers to their questions and start to regain a sense of safety and power.    After a person has been a Victim of Crime, a person often becomes overwhelmed with all of the changes, stress and emotional turmoil.  The Victim Advocate is able to step in and provide the emotional and practical support for the victim and their family.  The Victim Advocate assesses the victim's short term needs and long terms goals with the victim.

      While the Victim Advocate primarily works with women who are a victim of domestic violence, men are also impacted by domestic violence.  The face of a domestic violence victim reaches beyond borders of gender, economics and ethnicity.  By working together with all local community resources, the hope is to provide the best resources possible to the critical needs of those who have been impacted by crime.

      After the Victim Advocate has assessed the unique individual needs and concerns the Victim Advocate provides a variety of support and services.  The Victim Advocate can help members of the community who have been victimized by helping them with:
* Safety Plan Development
* Personal Advocacy
* Referrals to Community Resources such as counseling, support groups and resources
* Provides updates on the status of their criminal case
* Assists in filing for Victims of Crime Compensation
* Assist in filing for a Temporary Protection Order or Stalking Order
* Informs the Victim of Victim's Rights

The City of Sparks Police Department has received support for this project and the Victim Advocate has been with the Sparks Police Department since May of 2008.  This project is supported by grant number 2008-WF-AX-0054, awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice.  The opinions, findings, conclusions and recommendations expressed in this publication are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.
