Patrol Division K-9 Unit
The K-9 Unit was formed in 2005 with Officer Marsh and K-9 Cimbo and Officer Edmonson and K-9 Rocky. The role of the unit is to assist the Department with the location of suspects, drugs, and other evidence that could possibly be over looked by Officers. The K-9's unique and superior sense of smell makes their primary function a locating tool. They are trained to bite as an apprehension tool, but only in specific circumstances. They are also used by the Department as deterrent to people who may otherwise choose to run from or fight with the Police.
Many individuals have revealed themselves or complied with commands due to the presence of a Police Service Dog because they do not want to get bit by the dog. Our dogs have saved us from numerous foot pursuits and physical confrontations. Our Police Service Dogs are also trained to locate concealed drugs and drug money. The dogs also assist in the location of evidence dropped or concealed by suspects.
